Joanna Primus

Hi, my name is Joanna Primus and I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor. My hope is to create a safe space so clients can engage in self-discovery. I work to develop a strong relationship based on trust and authenticity, often using humor and gentle confrontation as part of the healing process. I have experience supporting clients experiencing trauma and grief, relationship challenges, self-esteem, anxiety, depression, and substance use disorders. I welcome all people, genders, and members of the LGBTQIA community 18 years and up.

In session, I invite clients to explore what gives their lives meaning and direction. I believe that even in the midst of pain, each person already has the tools they need to heal. My role is to help you reconnect with those strengths, trust your inner wisdom, and build a life that feels authentic and purposeful. I am also trained in using Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) to help process and resolve distressing memories, PTSD, anxiety, grief, and other trauma-related challenges in a way that is efficient, gentle, and empowering. I received a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from UNI and a Master’s degree in Psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology.


When I’m not in session, I can be found chasing live music, wandering a trail somewhere, or hanging out with my dogs, who firmly believe they run the household. These experiences ground me and remind me of the importance of balance, joy, and presence—values I also bring into my work with clients.
